They had a "bbq" at their school! It wasn't really a bbq, but it was fun. I'm actually really looking forward to real barbecue when I get home ... on the big green egg!
During the barbecue, the need arose and Kara and I had to make an ice cream run! Once again, I had ron con pasas (rum raisin) in honor of Bo.
When we made it back to the school, we were locked out! Fortunately, Ann-Marita let us back in just in time for everyone to leave. After wandering around Antigua for awhile, we finally settled on Mono Loco, the Guatemalan equivalent of SeƱor Frogs.
I was a bit pensive at first - I tend to avoid touristy places, but it turned out to be pretty great! They had a hot dog eating contest, watermelon, an American flag cake, baseball and Nascar on the tvs - pretty fantastic! They were also playing American music - lots of Springsteen and Mellencamp (both of whom I have no time for) but also some Skynyrd and Journey! Listening to "Sweet Home Alabama" took me back to my days on the Tennessee River with Simon and Plan C!
This is (from left to right) Heidi, Laural (who assures me her blog is better than mine), Ann-Marita, and Kara enjoying some watermelon!
I was a bit disappointed by this 4th of July though ... I was really looking forward to some payback. At least twice a week, I am rudely awakened at 3 or 4am by firecrackers. My plan was to buy a bunch of firecrackers and then tear through this city on my dirt bike while my passenger/tail gunner lit and tossed firecrackers. I was going to wake up all of Antigua!
Laural said she was going to join me wrapped in a flag and dressed as the statue of liberty, but I'm pretty sure most of what she's said to me has been entirely fabricated.
But I couldn't find any firecrackers! I haven't given up yet, though. If I find some tomorrow, I'm still going to do it. I'm giving myself a one day buffer :)
The wait staff was even wearing overalls!
Oh - last night or the night before, the Ixchel girls and I went to Papuseria Cheros! It was mi primera vez (my first time)! Kara told me to post a picture of it on the blog to remind Erin of what she's missing. Seemed kind of mean, but Kara insisted :) They're missing you at the house, Erin!
Oh yes...you missed the traditional 4th of july celebration at home. Here is a run down of the days events;
ReplyDelete- Early morning skinny dip (trunks required since we have house guests this summer)
- Delicious pancake breakfast ala Peanut!
- Start up the green egg (Sirlion roast slow cooked for 7 hours)
- Nap ;-)
- Power wash the drive way
- Invite friends (Eberts)
- Fireworks run to Mark & Jessies with the Kids
- Swim
- Dinner
- Lighting of the fireworks (Tommy's traditional thumb burn)
- Load up all on trailer and head to end of road to watch Cereland Fireworks
- Midnight skinny dip (again suits required :-(
Wish you were here!
The Dad
Clearly (or obvio, as I learned in class today), most of what I told you was fabricated. However, the part about the blog was entirely true.
